Q.) Why is the Payment Type Code field where we place an R or an S for WEB transactions formatted for two digits? Does it matter if it’s left or right justified?
A.) Although we find no explanation available for why this field was originally assigned two character spaces, on September 17, 2021 this field will become not only optional, but will also allow Originators to choose to include the value “S” to identify a single entry, “R” for a recurring entry, or “ST” for a standing authorization (thus requiring room for two characters). The field is considered alphanumeric, is left justified, and an empty character is to be "space filled" (Nacha Operating Rules, Page OR132, Payment Type Code).
